things we know and things we hope

Liked this in the Guardian today - an article by Rhidian Brook about his travels in Africa with his young family and how they inspired him to write the film Africa United. His reflections on what they had learned jumped out at me:

"it came down to some things we already knew: The world is in terrible shape, money isn't the answer, mankind gets its priorities badly wrong, as well as some things we had always suspected and kind of hoped were true: gratitude is one of the most important things anyone – adults and kids – can learn; a good small community can make a huge difference to a culture; and that much of the world is being held together not by money, power, guns or celebrity but by small, often hidden, acts of kindness."
